A barrier became
a finish line.

After missing a sub-two-hour marathon by 26 seconds in 2017, Eliud Kipchoge returned to the challenge. He described a simple training routine, learning from the first attempt, and mentally rehearsing the outcome.

In October 2019, he completed the specially organized INEOS 1:59 Challenge in 1:59:40.2. It was an extraordinary supported challenge, rather than an eligible official marathon world record.

Make the target clear. Review your attempts. Let what you learn shape the next one.

A writing habit.
A growing body of work.

In his 2013 annual review, James Clear described replacing inconsistent writing with a Monday-and-Thursday publishing schedule. By that review, he had published 114 articles since starting in November 2012.

The review recorded both his output and the growth of his audience. More importantly, it asked what went well, what did not, and what he was working toward next.

Choose a repeatable action. Record the work you complete. Make time to review the process.

Look closer.
Improve the details.

British Cycling’s retrospective on Dave Brailsford describes a focus on examining performance in detail and finding small advantages that could add up. The work was part of a wider program of coaching, preparation, and athlete development.

The team’s Olympic successes grew out of a deliberate process: looking closely at the work, improving the details, and preparing for the next challenge.

Review the parts you can influence. Try one small adjustment, observe the result, and keep learning.
